Brattleboro 11U All-Stars Claim 2024 State Championship

The Brattleboro 11U All-Star baseball team won the state championship on Monday, July 22 in dramatic fashion with an 11-8 come from behind victory over Barre.

Barre took an 8-1 lead in the top of the third, but Brattleboro remained calm and clawed their way back into the game.

Brattleboro got four runs back in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 8-5. After a quick top of the fourth, Brattleboro came back up to bat and at one point found themselves with runners on second and third with Zealand Wentworth at the plate. Wentworth hit a two RBI double in the gap to right center to make it a one run ballgame before Barre was able to get out of the inning. Brattleboro plated four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead for good. Owen Malouin had a big RBI double in the inning and Mason Vollinger had a big double down the first base line.

The comeback win “speaks volumes of their character and who they are as people, not just ballplayers,” said Brattleboro 11U coach Chad Gundry. “They’re competitors and there’s a few of them on that team that just wouldn’t let the group get down. They kept them up and kept plugging away one at bat at a time and we got it done.”

Over the weekend, Brattleboro had won a pair of games at the start of the state tournament. On Saturday, Brattleboro defeated Champlain Valley Little League 11-0 in four innings behind Gavin Carpenter who pitched a complete game.

With Brattleboro’s win in the state championship game, the team moves on to the regional competition and will be on the road to play against New Jersey on Saturday, July 27 at 1 pm.
